Apollo Hospital, Colombo is making arrangements to get some procedural matters cleared to do the first heart transplant in Sri Lanka on a seriously affected heart patient.
The operation will be carried out by Consultant Cardiothorasic surgeon Dr. Sujeeth H. Savarna FRCS.
Dr. Savarna who returned from UK recently and took over the Apollo’s heart surgery programme told the Daily News that he had participated in over 200 heart transplants in the UK and was looking forward to start this programme by doing the first heart transplant in January.
He said in this procedure, the heart has to be taken from a brain dead person.
“In UK most of the hearts to be transplanted are taken from accident victims. A doctor has to certify the victim as brain dead for the heart to be removed.
In Sri Lanka certain procedural matters have to be cleared by the authorities to get the brain dead approval,” Dr. Savarna said he was hopeful of getting this cleared in a week or two to do the first heart transplant in January next year.
